My Project 167 Wheelset is becoming a cult hit in Japan. What makes this wheelset great?
1) Transparent. Nothing is hidden behind stickers or trading company claims. Every component source is clearly indicated.
2) Quality. I spec’d the best quality in class components to meet a rational engineering and economic goal. Let’s take a look:
Rims: Manufactured by Gigantex in Taiwan. One of the world’s leading carbon rim manufacturer. The ‘167’ profile is a standout in terms of balance between aerodynamics, weight and durability. In more than 5ys of using this rim, I’ve never experienced a single failure. Gigantex has continually updated and evolved the construction to further improve this already incredible rim.
Hubs: Manufactured by Circus Monkey in Taiwan. High quality CNC of forged shell construction. Fitted with high grade Japanese bearings. This is a simple formula for a great hub. Period. The geometry of the set I chose matches the rim perfectly, so the result will be a balanced tension, equalized stiffness wheel. Plus, the Circus Monkey anodizing colors can’t be beat.
Spokes / Nipples: DT Champion. Yeah, bladed spokes are cool and ultra-high end spokes might save you a whopping 20gr/wheel weight and maybe .5w/wheel overall power @40+ kph. Those are facts. The other fact is they add up to more than 4x the cost in production! By sticking to a high quality, proven, spoke /nipple combination I can keep the cost in check and build an extremely durable and longlasting wheelset. Nipples are DT Pro-Lock brass. They’ll never seize up, never break, and last forever.
Building: Every wheelset is handmade here in Japan. Not by machine. And on the best truing stand available in the world. P&K. My building process is result of more than 35yrs ‘on the bench’. Compare that to the ‘sticker brands’ that shuffle workers on a weekly basis with little or no training.
Service and Support: All service and support is at the same place they were built. My shop. Again, providing 1 to 1 attention to every product built means we can service and support any issue quickly and perfectly. With no excuses.
